What Is the Difference Between a Soffit and Fascia Installation?

When it comes to fascia installation on a flat roof there are two main types of roofing systems, pitched roofs and flat roofs. The pitched roof is more traditional in style, whereas the flat roof is more modern in style where as the fascia system is the classic. With this in mind a fascia is the horizontal board that runs from the edge of the roof up to the edge of the soffit or roof surface. These systems are often made from wood and designed to resemble a mailed roof.

Flat roof fascia installation is done with the traditional method of routing timber vertically up the roof. There is then a cutout at each corner which forms a brace for the rafters to be attached to. To give the appearance of a true pitched roof the slats are real, the timber being inserted through tiny holes in the soffit to create a rigid connection. Once the timber is fastened into place the board is fastened into the rafters.

With pitched roof construction, or traditional fascia installation the boards are fixed to the soffits after being cut to size and shaped. In traditional styles the boards are left floating freely on the soffits and on the rafters. In the modern style they are fastened into the rafters with screws. They are either straight or slightly curved depending on the local environment and the design chosen. The boards are treated for moisture resistance to prevent warping and are also often damp proof.

Depending on the type of roof structure and the style chosen the fascia can either be flat to allow rain water to run off in the downspouts, angled to direct water away from the house or even straight and spindly to allow the water to channel through the gutter system. The straight types are usually preferred where there is little or no opportunity to angle the boards by means of an engineered form. Fascia installation on pitched roofs is best done by qualified professionals who will be able to advise on both installation methods and recommend the best options where cost is a factor.

Flat roof systems are typically made of wood, concrete or stone. The best solution for fascia installation on this type of roof would be to use a solid surface, preferably concrete soffit boards with wooden finials. This method is simple to apply and offers great resistance to termites and other pests. The installation of a single board takes just a few hours to a row of four or more boards may need to be laid out in order to provide a firm and secure connection. Finials are fixed onto the soffits at regular intervals to allow water to run off and away from the house. Check out the soffit fascia repair service by this services.

It's not always easy to visualise the differences between a soffit and fascia, so let us try and explain the differences in a little more detail. A soffit is actually a row of timber trimmings attached to the roof at each end. The soffit is connected to the rafters of the building by a series of rafter feet which are fixed to the bottom of the rafters. Rafters are usually fixed directly to the wall but can also be bolted directly to the floor joists as well. Fascia on the other hand is a continuous horizontal row of timber slats which are fixed directly to the ceiling or wall. The materials used to install a fascia are the same as that of the soft - wooden rafters and strings of fixed wooden finials. For more facts, click here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soffit
